Where To Stay in Albania: My Favorite Hotels & Guesthouses in this Beautiful COuntry

We visited Albania in Summer of 2023 and fell in LOVE with the country and the people. This guide will take you through where to stay in Albania for each area that we visited.

It will also include some places we didn’t personally stay, but that we saw along the way or have heard incredible things about.

Consider this your ultimate guide for where to stay in Albania.

This is the result of lots of research and thought put into these curated spots. If you’re looking for more information beyond where to stay in Albania, you can check out my post here —-> 10 Things You Should Know Before You Visit Albania

Where to stay in Albania: Theth

Theth is an absolutely magical place to stay, there is no other way to describe it. The mountains are absolutely stunning, it is so peaceful and secluded, and you can really just be one with nature here. The guesthouses honestly all look incredible and it is an amazing town to spend a night or two. You can be sure that if you stay in a Guesthouse in Albania you’ll have a special experience.

You should very much consider making your reservations in Theth in advance. The guest houses do fill up and there are not ample places to stay.

Villa Gjecaj Guesthouse

We stayed in “Villa Gjeçaj Guesthouse” and it was pure perfection. This family owned guest house felt so personal and well cared for.

It is important when booking a spot in Theth that you think about food. There aren’t many places to dine and most people eat at the guesthouse that they are staying at so I wanted to make sure mine had the best food. I believe I succeeded! People were visiting here to eat from other guest hoses as well as driving into Theth to eat and spend the day here. Everything we ate was fantastic and we had multiple meals here during our stay.

We also had the most incredible meat and cheese board and the wine here was fantastic as well. The room was so clean, comfortable, and cozy! No matter what room you would find yourself in you would have an absolutely stunning view. I could not recommend this spot more and I score it 11/10! If you’re looking for where to stay in Albania, this spot in Theth is one of the best.

Guest House Rrashkadoli

Guest House Rrashkadoli: I just realized booking.com has a really interesting feature. You can search “best reviews at best price”. This is the spot that came up when I did that! A 9.6 on booking is legit. I honestly don’t think you can go wrong in Theth. This place looks stunning and again has tons of mentions about the kindness of the hosts. We didn’t stay here personally but I would give it a shot on another visit or advise it if our first choice wasn’t available.

Where to Stay in Albania: Durres

We headed to Durres on a whim after some storms coming through Theth led us to scoot out a day early. We looked for some last minute spots on booking and found this great little apartment. Durres has a really nice promenade and a long beach. While it was not even close to the most beautiful beach we saw in Albania, it was a nice stop for a day on our way to Berat. When you’re trying to figure out where to stay in Albania, you shouldn’t overlook Durres.

Wave Beachfront Apartments

Wave Beachfront Apartments: This is common theme in Albania, but the host of this apartment was so fantastic. He was so kind to let us check in early and check out a bit late. The apartment was spotlessly clean and had an absolutely stunning view of the beach. It was air conditioned and had a nice little balcony. It was clean and comfortable and if you are spending a night in Durres I definitely recommend it.

Where to stay in Albania: Berat

The entire city of Berat is a UNESCO world Heritage site.  The town is nicknamed the city of 1000 windows.  It is on a river and it really feels like you’re stepping back in time when you visit here.  The castle is an incredible experience and you must watch the sunset there! It is also an excellent area for wine tasting! There is so much to see and do here and we loved exploring this area.

Hotel VIla Aleksander

One of my favorite spots we stayed on our trip. Berat is an incredible city and this hotel was perfect! The couple that run the hotel were so kind and thoughtful and welcoming. They didn’t speak much English and our Albanian is non existent! But we connected and they showed us all around and told us about the history of their hotel. It was such a friendly and warm experience.

Breakfast on the terrace every morning was truly perfect. The views over beautiful Berat were incredible too. The bed was comfortable the shower was great and I truly was SO SO happy we stayed here. The location was also perfect and walkable to everything! Highly recommend!!

Tradita e Beratit

The food looked incredible here and it’s the one spot I wish we didn’t miss. It also looks like an adorable place to stay! I have been seeing it a LOT on instagram and it seems they’re putting a lot of time and effort into creating great experiences for their guests! It would definitely be my next choice if we were to go back!

I also have a friend who recently visited here on his trip to Albania and shared that they absolutely loved it and it was great value for the money. This is definitely top of the list of where to stay in Albania if we return!

Pupa Winery & Guest House

If staying at this guesthouse is anything like our experience at the winery and lunch then it will be INCREDIBLE. If i was returning I’d love to try staying here! We had a wine tasting and lunch here and the property is insanely beautiful! It would be such a relaxing place to spend a night, drink wine, enjoy the views, and just relax!

Where to stay in Albania: Himare

Himare is a beautiful little beach town on the Albanian Riviera.  We loved our time here so much.  There is a castle and there are so many amazing places to beach hop around and eat.  We based ourselves here for the longest part of our trip and we are so glad we did.  I am going to list a few places here too but honestly the place we stayed was beyond incredible and I so highly recommend it I almost don’t want to list any others.

Arxontiko Hotel & Restaurant

I can’t say enough about how much we loved this hotel.

First of all : book a sea view room. The view is just stunning. You can see beaches on both sides and the most incredible blue water!

Second of all: make sure you eat here! The food was incredible we had a lunch and a dinner here besides having the most AMAZING breakfast every day. The family that runs this place is just beyond words. They are SO KIND, so thoughtful, so welcoming, we wished we could have stayed here longer and this was the longest stay of our trip! The room was clean and bright and beautiful, the shower was great, the AC worked great. There was parking for our car but we could walk to everything we needed in Himare. This place was 11/10!!! Perfection!

Agrotourism Himara

We didn’t stay in any Agrotourism spots on our trip but they seem like such a great type of accommodation. Often they grow their own food, have animals, and are in beautiful settings. I’m sure we would have enjoyed this place and it has exceptional reviews!

Where to stay in Albania: Ksamil

Ksamil is a resort/beach club type town at the Southern end of the Albanian Riviera.  You should be prepared for incredible looking water, but also for more crowds during the high season and needing to be prepared to book a spot on the beach each day.

One place of peace was our beautiful hotel and we really did love it.

Hotel Mira Mare

A beautiful place to stay in Ksamil. We were there during high season so I think it’s also a plus that this hotel is a little bit away from things and a bit quieter. The couple who runs the place was so kind and thoughtful. The terrace is the highlight! We ate the most wonderful breakfast up here and also had happy hour drinks overlooking Ksamil. The room was clean and bright and had a balcony to hang out on. Overall we loved our stay here and would recommend it! They also had an actual small parking lot which is pretty unheard of in Albania and we were super thankful for!

Poda Boutique Hotel

PODA seems to dominate a large section of Ksamil and all of it looks nice. We did enjoy a sunset dinner at their restaurant and their beach bar set up looks great so I can only assume the hotel would be a great spot as well. It’s right in the middle of all of the action and has a pool as well!

Where to stay in Albania: Bonus Spot

Dhermi

When making a list of “where to stay in Albania” I would be remiss to not mention Dhermi. We did not visit this area, but if I were to visit again, I would skip Ksamil and visit here. If you get the opportunity you can check out some hotel options here —-> Hotels in Dhermi
