This Barcelona guide will detail how to spend a fantastic 4 days in the city. It will provide details things to see, do, eat, and drink. It will also include some incredible tours, and one visit outside of the city. It will include tips & “need to know” info about Barcelona. It will also include things I would add if I had more time, or alternate activities if you’re not committed to the entire itinerary.

Safety
I don’t often feel the need to mention safety in many of my posts. But for this Barcelona Guide, as people are always talking about this issue, I thought I’d briefly address it. As with any place you visit you need to be aware of your surroundings. You should be smart with your belongings, and be more cautious at night. I can honestly say that we’d read and heard SO many warnings before visit here. People said that Barcelona was the biggest pick pocketing city in Europe right now and that we had a 100% chance of having our things stolen etc etc.
We had NO issues what so ever, we never felt unsafe, we never even felt a bad vibe. Again we stuck to main areas, we stayed together, we kept our guard up. But aside from normal safety precautions you will have a great time and have nothing to worry about.
Getting Around
For the purpoes of this Barcelona guide we got around the whole weekend mostly on foot. When a taxi was needed I will note it in this itinerary, but it was rare. One thing to note is that uber doesn’t always work well here. We used it a few times but sometimes we would just wait and wait and it would never come. Taxis were easier by far and were frequent.
Where to Stay
There are a lot of great areas you could choose in Barcelona. Personally, I find the Gothic Quarter and El Born area to be the most lively and fun area to stay. They are the areas with the charming streets you want to walk around and shop, the little alleys and cute places to sit and sip a drink, and the action you’re looking for. It can be nice to be near the Sagrada Familia for the views. However, other areas of the city are more lively as you’ll see throughout this Barcelona Guide.
On my last trip we stayed in a really nice airbnb, I was on a girls trip with 6 women. This place was perfect for a girl group. It would also be perfect for 2 couples. Or 3 couples if one couple really didn’t mind having a smaller room. The terrace of this place was incredible and the location was perfect. It was right off the Ramblas (main street in Barcelona) and in easy walking distance to nearly anything we wanted to do.

Hotel Gaudí: We enjoyed this hotel and really liked the small rooftop plunge pool with the great view. The rooftop of this hotel actually overlooked the top of “Gaudi’s Palace Güell”. It was neat to be able to people watch as tourists explored the rooftop of the Palace. We thought it was really nice, clean, and comfortable. It was within easy walking distance to a lot of things we wanted to do and see.
Day 1: Explore the Gothic Quarter, The Sagrada Familia, & the Park Guell
Start with Mercado de La Boqueria
No Barcelona Guide would be complete without including this market! There is nothing better than a good market. Spain truly takes the cake for some of my favorite markets in the world. You MUST go here and get a juice in the morning to start the day. They have so many amazing flavors and you can mix and match. You also MUST try the Spanish jamoñ. You could also come to this market for lunch or dinner, or to gather a ton of supplies for a picnic. I listed it as the first thing on the itinerary as it is a great way to start your day. However, you should really visit here multiple times while you’re in Barcelona.
Cathedral of Barcelona
An easy 10 minute walk from the market you will find the Cathedral. It is worth checking out both inside and outside. The area in front of the church is super lively and always has a crowd, some music, a flea market, etc. If you want to go inside make sure you are dressed appropriately.
La Sagrada Familia
This is a hefty walk from the Gothic Quarter and will take about 40 minutes. If you’re not up for the walk you can always take transportation. If you’re coming to Barcelona, I truly hope you’re not missing this place. I think any good Barcelona Guide would include it. There is no church like it in the world and it is SO interesting and beautiful to see. Guadi is just so unique and impressive and the designs and colors inside the church are so magical. It is also worthwhile to go up into the towers and get a view over Barcelona.
My advice, if you are a seasoned traveler and comfortable on your own, is to book DIRECTLY through the website for the Sagrada Familia. You can book a time slot and go right in. If you’re not as comfortable, would like a guide, or want to just have the ease of having someone take care of it for you, then you can check out some tour options as well.

Tapas lunch time
Ziryab Fusió Tapas Bar: We found this spot so you don’t have to! This was a stroke of good luck as we were wandering around some smaller back alleys. That’s always where you find the hidden gems. We loved this charming little spot! We had a jamoñ & cheese board, some excellent tapas, a lovely white wine, and a great time. The staff was so kind and welcoming and the decor was so beautiful! I highly recommend seeking it out! It looked like it would be a great spot for a pre dinner happy hour as well.
Park Guell
Park Guell is one of the only main sites of Barcelona that is set quite far away from the city. Honestly the walk can be done (and I have done it), but it doesn’t even take you past any real main sites or attractions, so if you’re going to get a ride, this is likely the time.
It was fun to visit the park for the sunset slot. Try to plan your visit for about a half hour to an hour before sunset. This way you can enjoy walking the park and then enjoy the sunset as well! Book through the park directly for best pricing! This park is pretty large but you can easily explore it in about an hour or two. If you’re looking for the famous part you see on instagram, that area isn’t huge and you can cover it pretty quickly. Make sure to climb up higher for some amazing views over Barcelona. There is also a small cafe in the park where you can grab a snack and a drink if needed. It is right by the main area where the gingerbread looking house is.
Dinner time
Milk Bar & Bistro: This place is supposed to be an AWESOME brunch spot too. But don’t skip it for dinner we LOVED all of the tapas we had and we tried almost everything! Of course we had jamoñ, we tried delightful croquettes, panko coated avocado fingers, a delicious grilled halloumi cheese, potatoes bravos, and the ramen noodle burger. Wine was great, service was so kind and welcoming! We made an early reservation here since it was our first day and we knew we’d be a bit tired. It started to fill up as we were heading out, it is customary to eat quite late in Spain.
Treat time
Gelaaati Di Marco: I visited Barcelona with my husband in 2015 and thought this was some of the best gelato ever. You can imagine how thrilled I was to return in 2024 and have it still be there! It was as great as I remembered! They have this special nutella type topping that you can get on your gelato or you can have it put in the middle. In my opinion it is a must do! Such a special treat! This might not be found on your average Barcelona Guide!
Day 2: Check out some Guadi sites, have brunch, end with a paella and sangria making class
Choose your own adventure with one of these sites
Casa Batlló: Another amazing work of Guadi and a lovely place to see. The rooftop is often listed as one of the most unique works of Gaudi to see. I recommend going right at opening time to avoid the biggest crowds. If you LOVE Guadi you may want to change an entire day of this itinerary into a full day of his sites, as there are so many. It’s also worth checking the website for special nights and events that they have here, it would be a really neat way to see and experience it.

Palau de la Música Catalana: Another mind blowing and beautiful place to see. This is a concert hall and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can take a self guided, guided, or audio guide tour. You can also look to see when there are performances and events, this would be an excellent way to see the building itself as well.

Brunch time
I played a little game with my girls before the trip where we each listed some brunch spots we’d want to try and then saw if we had any matches. This place was one of them so I thought it was perfect to add to this Barcelona Guide.
PETIT POT CAFE BISTRO BRUNCH: This little place was delightful. It is a little out of the way of the main area and you likely wouldn’t just wander in here (which is the kind of thing I love). It was beautiful inside and the vibe was so light and fun. We had an excellent brunch with some delicious Spanish cava and it was SO well priced! Everyone loved their meals and it was such a charming little place!
Stroll the streets or check out a cute wine bar
La Vinya del Senyor: This was a perfect spot to take a nice little drink break and people watch. It is on the same square as the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, so while you’re here, take a walk through. The Basilica holds a lot of history for the people of Barcelona. We learned more about it on our wine and tapas tour.
Time for class
Paella & Sangria Making Class: This was truly one of the most fun parts of our trip! We enjoyed walking through the market again with a guide and learning more about what was on offer. We really enjoyed learning more about paella making and we left wanting to buy our own paella pans! The food was FANTASTIC we loved everything we made. The hosts of this experience were so welcoming and fun. The sangria was delicious as well and we loved that they had alternative options for a member of our group that was not drinking. Overall, this experience was so entertaining. It was a great way to spend an evening and get a delicious meal at the same time!

Day 3: Beaching, exploring, and wine & tapas tour
Barceloneta Beach
The great thing about the beach in Barcelona is that it can really be enjoyed almost year round. Exploring and walking along the promenade down by the beach is such a nice way to spend a morning or afternoon. On a nice day there is so much action down here! The last time I visited was in February so it was a perfect place to stroll and get some sun. If you visit in the summer it will be crowded but it is such a fun and happy vibe. It is also so lovely to wake up and walk or run here and enjoy the scene before it is crowded.
Lunch
If you plan to get lunch down by the beach, you should make reservations in advance. We tried to wing this part of our trip and it did not work out for us. We ended up walking a few blocks away from this area to find a spot. It was still excellent, but it would have been nice to have the beach vibes and views. If you don’t mind a spot off the beach, the place we ate was called La Mar Salada Restaurant. It was simple, I had great shrimp and clams, and we enjoyed sitting in the sunshine on the terrace here.
After lunch stroll through Ciutadella Park
If you’ve visited any city in Europe before, you likely know that parks are a wonderful oasis where people love to spend time. This park is no exception. It is so beautiful and there is so much to see here. I highly recommend taking a nice walk, or grabbing some snacks and having a little picnic if the weather is nice. The entrance to the park is the Barcelona Arc de Triumph. It is really beautiful to see as well and you can’t miss it when you’re walking through. The park also contains a zoo (which I haven’t visited), the Catalan Parliament Building, an artificial lake, sculptures and fountains, and more.
Check out a surprising rooftop bar
Bar Tomate BCN: We headed to the Placa Reial to have a nice mid day break and as we were walking around the square looking for a spot, we saw a little sign that said “check out our rooftop”. I’m SO glad that we did. We had to order drinks downstairs and bring them up, but this wasn’t an issue for us. We were so surprised when we walked out onto the terrace! There is an excellent view down over the square and the rooftops of Barcelona. You can even see the Sagrada Familia in the distance. I haven’t seen this one on any other Barcelona Guide so if you’re lucky you can enjoy it pretty peacefully too!
Wine & tapas tour
We had such a good time on our wine and tapas tour! We walked around a bit of the El Born neighborhood and the Gothic Quarter. We were taken to 3 different spots that we certainly wouldn’t have found on our own. At each stop we got to try drinks and multiple tapas. There was more than enough food to keep us full without need for a dinner and the things we tried were delicious!

Wind down in the Plaça Reial
The Placa Reial is a vibrant and bustling square right in the heart of the Gothic Quarter. It’s a great place to grab a drink and people watch and be a part of the scene. If you’re still looking for something more after your tour, this is a great place to pass some time.
Day 4: Wine tasting in the Penedes Valley, rooftop bar of dreams, & dinner
Wine tour starts early
Take a tour to explore the wine region outside Barcelona! I am so thankful that we found this experience. Everything was taken care of for us, and we had such an amazing time. This vineyard trip takes up a good chunk of your day. You leave at 8:00 am and return to Barcelona around 3pm. I highly advise you eat breakfast before you take the tour. Snacks are provided, but it is not enough to feel full for a whole day.
We visited two vineyards and did cava & wine tastings at both. They were both run by the same family “San Blas” but they were each unique in their own way. At the first stop we got to take an open jeep ride through the vineyards and see the stunning landscapes of the valley. Then we returned to the house to taste some wines and snacks. At the second stop we got to visit the cellars and then we did a tasting in their ornate tasting room!

While you are waiting for your sunset reservation at the coolest rooftop bar… stop to grab some tapas in the area at Sagradas Tapas Nice little spot with a sweet view for some quick bites and a drink mid day!
Bar-Terrassa Sercotel Rosselló: one of the best views in Barcelona
This is one of those places that takes a bit of effort. You may be able to get lucky in the off-season and walk in, but I would not risk it. I had to set an alarm to make a reservation months in advance for this spot. I also highly recommend making a reservation for sunset, it is such a beautiful time. Although the sun actually sets behind the bar, the views are incredible over the Sagrada Familia as the sun sets. I don’t think there could possibly be a cooler view of the Sagrada familia in all of Barcelona. For an exclusive rooftop location, I actually found this spot to be reasonably priced, the drinks were very large and delicious! Everyone gets a great spot here, there is no bad view, and best of all we never felt rushed. We found this to be one of our favorite spots of the trip.
Dinner options
Sensi Tapas: Sensi actually has a few locations throughout the city and I don’t believe you can go wrong with any of them. I visited for the first time in 2015 and was unsure if my memory served me well, thankfully we had another great experience when I just returned! Pick the neighborhood you’re closest to, or the one that fits your vibe the best. They have tapas, meals, and as we were a group of 6 they did an excellent tasting menu for us.
El Set: This is an excellent spot for charcuterie and I would LOVE to have dinner here. We had some of the best jamoñ we’ve tasted while we were here. I loved the interior and the spot down an alley in the El Born neighborhood.
Bonus Ideas if you have more time
I based this Barcelona Guide off of my most recent visit to Barcelona, but I have visited before and there are a number of other things to see and do if you have more time.
Take a bike tour: Since Barcelona can be quite spread out, it is a great city to enjoy a bike tour. I also think it’s a great thing to do on your first day. It helps you to get a feel for the city, the neighborhoods, and your guide can give you some great insights into things to do, see, and eat.

Montjuïc: If you have time and interest you can walk a long way or take the cable car up here to explore. There is actually quite a bit to see up here besides some amazing views over Barcelona. This blog post (not by me) gives ALL the info you need.
Mercat del Born: This place used to be a market and now houses ruins and is an important historical site. It’s free to enter and take a peek around, you can also pay for a tour and to see the site and exhibition. Make sure to check opening times and if you want a guide to check the times English speaking guides are available.
Kitchens of Saint Catherine: We didn’t eat here, but it was attached to a market and it looked like such a cool place with an awesome vibe. Def would give it a try next visit.
Cañete: We didn’t get a chance to eat here but our airbnb host insisted that it was one of the best places to try some “high end” tapas. It was on the same street as our airbnb and it was packed every night. He recommended making reservations. It looked SO bustling and like a great vibe. It was so lively every time we walked by. We would definitely try to give it a go next time we’re in Barcelona.
Day Trip to Montserrat: Many Barcelona Guides will mention this as an amazing day trip. I somehow still haven’t done it yet! But I’d love to in the future.
