Korcula, Croatia: Mini Guide

Getting there

Korcula was an incredible place to visit. In Croatia, the island of Hvar gets a lot of hype as the best island, I am sure it is for great reason, although we haven’t been there yet. However, Korcula deserves some major hype as well! We absolutely loved everything about this island.

Getting to Korcula is easy by ferry. We took our car on the ferry from Split, which took about 2.5 hours.  And after Korcula, we took another quick 15-minute ferry onward to Orebic to spend a night. Next, we drove onward to Dubrovnik. You could also take a ferry as a foot passenger, and I am sure you could take ferries from many different locations in Croatia.

If you want more information about our itinerary, check out my post here to see how we made it all work.

Where to stay

We stayed in a perfect little airbnb right outside the center of town. The woman who ran it lived in the same building and was so incredibly sweet and kind. We had an awesome outdoor area where we could relax and enjoy coffee with a view of the ocean. We could walk to everything we needed, and we felt so safe and happy everywhere we went on the island. The airbnb is no longer in service but I would 100% recommend staying in or near the Old Town.

The old town of Korcula is perfect for exploring. You can get around the whole thing in a day easily, but if you stay longer you get to sample and explore all of the little wonderful things it has to offer. It has so many cute shops, restaurants, cafes and bars, and an interesting history. The people are so welcoming and kind everywhere you go. The sunsets are beautiful and you can view them from many areas of the old town, which is a great thing to do in the evening.

Where to eat

We ate such wonderful food throughout our time on this island. Korcula is full of great places to eat and snack. I enjoyed going for a run each morning and stopping by the local street market vendors to get fruit for our breakfasts. It was such a pleasure each morning to chat with the locals and pick up fresh fruit. One of the fruit vendors even turned out to be our wine server from the evening before!

I have updated this post as some of the place we visited are no long open. We did enjoy one stop called “Dida” that had a nice terrace on the water. It was a lovely place to sit and enjoy a meal. I am sure the culinary scene in Korcula has improved since our visit and I look forward to going back!

Where to drink

Just like there are many great places to eat on Korcula, there are also many fun places to stop and have a drink! My favorite place that we tried was “Wine Bar Bokar”, we sat in the alley right outside and tasted so many incredible wines. We had some small bites with our tasting and it was such a wonderful experience. The staff was so kind and helpful and gave us such great recommendations, we loved everything we tried.

Another neat experience was going to the bar “Massimo”, which is a cocktail bar on top of a fortress turret. You have to climb some stairs and also a ladder to get up there, but it’s worth the effort. We enjoyed sipping a drink up there while checking out the views from above.

We were in Korcula during the world cup 2018, and Croatia was winning each round. This was a super fun time to be in Croatia and people were in the streets watching games, cheering for their teams and celebrating wins, and Korcula was no exception. The vibe on the island was jovial and we definitely got caught up in the hype.

Experience we loved

An experience not to miss on Korcula, if it is still there, is a wine and bike tour. We took this tour with Korcula Explorer and it was so much fun. We road bikes all throughout the island, past beautiful beaches, smaller towns, and vineyards. We ended up at a winery and tasted SO MUCH WINE, and eventually were driven back to the old town. I don’t think we’ve ever been served so much wine on a wine tour. A highlight was getting to try the Croatian white wine, “Grk”, which is unique to the area and we really enjoyed. We got to make new friends, try so many wines, have some snacks, and enjoy the beautiful view from the winery. We had a blast and would highly recommend this experience.

If biking isn’t your thing, I also found this tour that looks super fun! —-> Korcula Buggy and Wine Tasting Tour

Celebrations on Korcula

One of the coolest things about travel is seeing the way other people, countries, and cultures celebrate. I love to check the calendar when we’re visiting places to see if anything special is going on. The most interesting and unique thing about our time in Korcula was their celebration of the “1/2 New Year”. On June 30th, they have a giant event throughout the town to celebrate the half new year. We had no idea this was going to be going on and were surprised by the event. There is a very large parade where groups of locals and tourists dress up in different themes and parade through the streets. There seemed to be partying all night long and there was a fireworks display at midnight. It was a wild celebration to be surprised with and we really enjoyed seeing it happen. We would advise visiting during this time just to see all of the excitement if you’re here during this time of year.

Beaches

Korcula town had some fun and different beaches surrounding it. Most were pebbly or rocky, but enjoyable to hang out on. We loved walking around the rocks by our airbnb and sitting and enjoying the ocean. We didn’t explore the island by car while we were there, but you could definitely explore and check out some more beaches. We spent our time around the old town and lounging on the “beaches” near our airbnb and we had an amazing time. I would love to revisit Korcula one day to see more of this beautiful and exciting island.
